Status Notice: Upcoming — takes effect 16 November 2026.
Immigration New Zealand is introducing a short-term graduate work visa and expanding post-study work visa eligibility starting 16 November 2026. These structural additions provide new pathways for students completing certificate, diploma, and degree-level qualifications across New Zealand [1].
What this means in practice
From 16 November 2026, international graduates who complete NZQCF Level 5 to 7 qualifications through full-time study lasting at least 24 weeks can apply for a six-month Short-term Graduate Work Visa. Applicants for this short-term visa must demonstrate at least NZD $5,000 in maintenance funds. Additionally, standard Post Study Work Visa eligibility is expanding to include Level 7 graduate diploma holders who also hold a recognized bachelor's degree, whether completed in New Zealand or overseas. Furthermore, lifetime limits restrict individuals to a maximum of one Short-term Graduate Work Visa and one Post Study Work Visa per person.
Who should check this
This update applies to international students completing Level 5, Level 6, or Level 7 qualifications and graduate diplomas in New Zealand, as well as education providers advising graduating cohorts ahead of the November implementation date.
Practical checklist
- Verify whether your qualification level and study duration meet the requirements for the new short-term graduate work visa or expanded post-study work visa.
- Prepare financial documentation proving at least NZD $5,000 in available maintenance funds if you plan to apply for the short-term graduate work visa.
- Compile your bachelor's degree certificates and academic transcripts if applying through the expanded graduate diploma pathway.
- Review your visa history to confirm adherence to the lifetime limit of one short-term and one post-study work visa per person.
Important limits or current position
Applications for these updated work visa options open on 16 November 2026. Until that date, existing post-study work visa settings remain in effect.
