Status: In force (Effective 1 June 2026)

Immigration New Zealand has introduced mandatory minimum English language standards for Accredited Employer Work Visa applications in skill level 3 positions. Effective 1 June 2026, applicants across these mid-skilled roles must demonstrate foundational English proficiency [1].

What this means in practice

The policy extension applies an English language threshold—such as an overall IELTS score of 4.0 or equivalent—to skill level 3 positions, which comprise approximately half of all Accredited Employer Work Visa applications. Applicants must provide acceptable evidence of English capability when lodging new work visa applications [1].

Exemptions apply for specific groups. Accredited Employer Work Visas expiring on or before 1 December 2026 are exempt from the requirement. Applicants who previously supplied qualifying English evidence to Immigration New Zealand do not need to re-supply it, and job change applications remain excluded [1].

Who should check this

This update affects prospective migrants planning to apply for mid-skilled employment under skill level 3 categories, as well as New Zealand employers recruiting international workers for these technical roles [1].

Practical checklist

  • Verify whether your target occupation falls under ANZSCO or National Occupation List skill level 3 [1].
  • Schedule an approved English language test, such as IELTS 4.0 or equivalent, prior to visa submission if no prior exemptions apply [1].
  • Check whether previous immigration filings established qualifying English proficiency or study history [1].
  • Determine whether your current visa expiry date falls on or before 1 December 2026 to confirm transitional exemption eligibility [1].

Important limits or current position

This update establishes a baseline language standard for mid-skilled work visas but does not alter standard health, character, or employer accreditation requirements [1].
